US OPEN (August 30 to September 12th) - It’s nearly tennis time. Or as I refer to it, “the most wonderful time of the year”.
HADESTOWN on BROADWAY (Re-opens September 2) - I didn’t see this the first time around but I’ve heard it’s fantastic. “Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love.”
TRIAL ON THE POTOMAC: THE IMPEACHMENT OF RICHARD NIXON on BROADWAY (Closing September 4) - “Trial on the Potomac is a new play inspired by the real-life discoveries of Geoff Shepard, a lawyer who worked in the Nixon White House during the Watergate scandal. This is alternative history. In our play, Nixon does not resign but instead stands for an impeachment trial.”
AUSTRIAN MASTERWORKS and WIENER WERKSTATTE FASHION & ACCESSORIES at the NEUE GALERIE (Closing September 5) - “The Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops), an artist and craftsmen collective, was launched in 1903. At its outset, the firm focused on metalwork, including jewelry. The group was initially comprised of two designers—Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser—and three artisans. This exhibition includes a group of rare and mostly unique designs of jewelry by Hoffmann and Moser as well as other designers who later joined the firm, including Carl Otto Czeschka and Dagobert Peche.”
NEW YORK FASHION WEEK (September 8-12) - Fashion week just got easier to access with these experience passes.
INDEPENDENT ART FAIR (September 9-12) - The art fair is moving to the Battery Maritime Building for the first time this year.
ANDY WARHOL: PHOTO FACTORY at FOTOGRAFISKA (Opening September 10) - An “incredibly comprehensive survey of Warhol’s photographic oeuvre. Over 120 images, 20 of which have never been exhibited, pay homage to Warhol’s iconic New York City studio and offer a distinctly intimate visual diary of the artist’s life and work.”
MANDELA on BROADWAY (Closing September 14) - “Confrontational, uncompromising and fearless in their pursuit for freedom of oppression, Mandela, Winnie and The ANC fight against enormous odds, all the while maintaining their dignity and compassion. With all its depth, the creativity of "Mandela" gives such a profoundly unforgettable experience that pleasantly surprises the audience, making them want to see more. With all of its layers, Mandela manages to fluidly enact how the U.S and South Africa mirrored each other with how protesting Blacks suffered similar social injustices while fighting against oppression.”
IN AMERICA: A LEXICON OF FASHION at THE MET (Opening September 18) - “The Costume Institute’s next major exhibition is a two-part exploration of fashion in the United States. Part one in the Anna Wintour Costume Center will establish a modern vocabulary of American style emphasizing the expressive qualities of dress and deeper associations with issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion.”
OPENING NIGHT at the NYCB (September 21) - I am beyond excited for the ballet to return.
MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL (Re-opens September 24) - I usually prefer plays over musicals but this is one musical that’ I’m dying to see. “Set in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris, France at the turn of the century, a world of indulgent beauty Enter a world of splendor and romance, of eye-popping excess, of glitz, grandeur and glory! A world where Bohemians and aristocrats rub elbows and revel in electrifying enchantment. Pop the champagne and prepare for the spectacular spectacular…”
METAMORPHOSIS on BROADWAY (Closing September 26) - “Hailed as one of Maria Caruso's greatest solo creations to date, Metamorphosis, has been performed across the globe since its premiere at Israel's Karmiel Dance Festival in 2018. A dance theatre work, heavily influenced by the artist's ballet and modern vocabularies, the audience is immersed in the emotion of the creator's true story and selfless expression on the stage.”
FALL FASHION GALA at the NYCB (September 30) - Me, in a gown, on your arm. Nothing is sexier than a black tie dress code.
ROBBINS + RATMANSKY at the NYCB - The only ballet in the fall season that I don’t already have tickets for. Alternatively, be my plus one for a date that’s in my subscription?
